Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

My passion to address the need to challenge students to excel in STREAM is personal because the answers to our global problems lie in the minds of students that have been dismissed as a problem in society. I grew up with these students and realized at an early age that because of my family structure and support, I was able to succeed in ways that prohibited their success. I’m passionate about this problem because the conditions of our communities will not change until we collectively address root causes of deferring dreams for adults that started when they were kids.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

I came up with the idea for STREAM Innovations while I was completing a postdoctoral fellowship at a federal lab and was a triple minority –US born, female and African-American. Science can be exciting and isolating, but not having other scientists want to naturally engage you scientifically is very disheartening. Even though a STEM pipeline was instrumental in my success, it will not be enough for the current generation of young innovators.

Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

Today’s workforce is in the midst of a new “Industrial Revolution” and we must prepare this  generation for the careers that they will create for themselves. The “normal” days of mass production are nearing  their end  and our society must adapt to that change.  STREAM careers are the natural adaptation that will ensure that the next generations thrive and succeed.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

We all have a story of why we are passionate about STREAM. Mine started my Junior year with a great teacher, Mrs. Belinda Reddick. I was not prepared for a senior level genetics course, her love of science not only ensured my success but ignited my passion for science. Everyone doesn’t have a Mrs. Reddick. Working with STREAM Innovations provides me the opportunity to spark students’ interests and fuel their passions for the future.

Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

As a strong believer in technical and scientific advancement as a society, I believe that STEM careers are the driving engine to that advancement and frankly the world needs them. These fields are in high demand, are growing, and continue to trend toward high growth. Careers in the science and technology sector also have the unique ability to pull individuals out of poverty and have sustainable and beneficial careers.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

STEM careers all start with education. Education in science and tech with a strong reading education and the incorporation of the arts cultivates a strong STEM workforce. While this sounds simple, there is a huge gap in the education system! A lot of young students, especially in rural and urban areas, do not have access to the same education as others.

The education system is not changing at the rate we need it to, so it is important for individuals and organizations to step up and help fill the gap in education and give bright and gifted children exposure to STREAM in an effort to close the education gap.

Working with STREAM is my way of helping fill that gap. I believe in the goals of STEAM Innovations and I believe that their work can make a change in our local community and eventually in the WORLD.

Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

As a technologist and a manager of other technologists, I see the impact of the Internet, mobile technologies, the Internet of Things, AI, machine learning, and other advanced technologies on our economy and culture. I believe we need not only people with deep knowledge of these technologies, but also the important problem solving and ethical decision making skills required for us to use the technologies for the betterment of society as a whole.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to play with computers, electronics, and other technologies as a child. That experience opened my eyes to career choices later in life. I’d like to make sure as many children as possible have the same chance.
