Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

My passion to address the need to challenge students to excel in STREAM is personal because the answers to our global problems lie in the minds of students that have been dismissed as a problem in society. I grew up with these students and realized at an early age that because of my family structure and support, I was able to succeed in ways that prohibited their success. I’m passionate about this problem because the conditions of our communities will not change until we collectively address root causes of deferring dreams for adults that started when they were kids.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

I came up with the idea for STREAM Innovations while I was completing a postdoctoral fellowship at a federal lab and was a triple minority –US born, female and African-American. Science can be exciting and isolating, but not having other scientists want to naturally engage you scientifically is very disheartening. Even though a STEM pipeline was instrumental in my success, it will not be enough for the current generation of young innovators.

Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

Today’s workforce is in the midst of a new “Industrial Revolution” and we must prepare this  generation for the careers that they will create for themselves. The “normal” days of mass production are nearing  their end  and our society must adapt to that change.  STREAM careers are the natural adaptation that will ensure that the next generations thrive and succeed.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

We all have a story of why we are passionate about STREAM. Mine started my Junior year with a great teacher, Belinda Reddick. I was not prepared for a senior level genetics course, her love of science not only ensured my success but ignited my passion for science. Everyone doesn’t have a Mrs. Reddick. Working with STREAM Innovations provides me the opportunity to spark students’ interests and fuel their passions for the future.

Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics—STREAM, and therefore, STREAM education—are vital to our future—the future of our country, the future of our region and the future of our children. STREAM is everywhere; it shapes our everyday experiences. According to the U. S. Labor Department, the10 fastest growing occupations from 2008-2018 are STREAM careers.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

Every election depends on choosing leaders who know how to base decisions on sound economics and how to evaluate statistics. Many local and state votes depend on both scientific and economic knowledge.  We need to encourage the students currently in our educational systems, as well as future generations of students, to understand and embrace the technology that affects them every day of their lives. Making science and math courses fun and interesting will not only help students to learn, but might also plant the “seed of interest” that could grow into an exciting and rewarding STREAM career.
