Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

My passion to address the need to challenge students to excel in STREAM is personal because the answers to our global problems lie in the minds of students that have been dismissed as a problem in society. I grew up with these students and realized at an early age that because of my family structure and support, I was able to succeed in ways that prohibited their success. I’m passionate about this problem because the conditions of our communities will not change until we collectively address root causes of deferring dreams for adults that started when they were kids.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

I came up with the idea for STREAM Innovations while I was completing a postdoctoral fellowship at a federal lab and was a triple minority –US born, female and African-American. Science can be exciting and isolating, but not having other scientists want to naturally engage you scientifically is very disheartening. Even though a STEM pipeline was instrumental in my success, it will not be enough for the current generation of young innovators.

Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

Today’s workforce is in the midst of a new “Industrial Revolution” and we must prepare this  generation for the careers that they will create for themselves. The “normal” days of mass production are nearing  their end  and our society must adapt to that change.  STREAM careers are the natural adaptation that will ensure that the next generations thrive and succeed.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

We all have a story of why we are passionate about STREAM. Mine started my Junior year with a great teacher, Mrs. Belinda Reddick. I was not prepared for a senior level genetics course, her love of science not only ensured my success but ignited my passion for science. Everyone doesn’t have a Mrs. Reddick. Working with STREAM Innovations provides me the opportunity to spark students’ interests and fuel their passions for the future.

Why are STREAM Careers important to you?

STREAM broadens the career availability by expanding past just Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. With the connection of Reading and Art it allows students to be well-rounded in today’s job market.

Why has it been important for you to work with STREAM Innovations?

STREAM Innovations’ infusion of Reading and Art exposes students to think creatively and be innovative; stretching them beyond just solving problems but making it applicable to the real world. I believe these disciplines are crucial in preparing this generation as we continue to propel in this age of technology.
